How actor Austin Basis turns Type 1 Diabetes into a story of strength

Austin's story is about imagination, advocacy, and helping kids feel proud of every part of who they are.

Diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes as a child, Austin grew up learning how much responsibility, resilience, and self-awareness T1D can require. Today, as an actor, writer, producer, Breakthrough T1D celebrity ambassador, and co-creator of The KINETIX, he uses storytelling to help kids with diabetes and other chronic conditions feel seen, included, and powerful.

The Austin Limited Edition GloGlo jar celebrates that same message: your story can be powerful, your differences can become strengths, and no child living with T1D should feel alone.

1. Can you introduce yourself?

I'm Austin Basis, an actor, writer, producer, artist, advocate, and celebrity ambassador and board member for Breakthrough T1D. I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes as a kid, and a big part of my work has been to help people feel seen, especially children learning to live with diabetes or other chronic conditions. I look at T1D as a gift and wouldn’t be who I am today without it.

2. What inspired The KINETIX?

The KINETIX came from a simple idea: kids with disabilities and chronic illnesses deserve to see themselves as the heroes of the story. The series follows young people whose differences become part of their strength, including a character living with Type 1 Diabetes who turns into a super-cyborg named CYABETES! It’s about imagination, representation, and the power of positive thinking- helping kids believe that what makes them different can also make them powerful.

3. How has living with Type 1 Diabetes shaped you?

Living with T1D taught me responsibility early. From a very young age, I learned to listen to my body, prepare, adjust, and keep going even when things feel unpredictable. It didn’t mean everything was easy, but it built resilience, self-trust, and a deeper understanding of what I was capable of.

4. What advice would you give a kid newly diagnosed with T1D?

You are not alone and you do not need to hide it. Type 1 Diabetes is something you manage, but it does not define everything about you. You can still be creative, funny, brave, athletic, curious, and full of dreams. Nothing will stop you from accomplishing your goals, if you take care of yourself, listen to your parents, trust your doctors and build a team around you. And never be afraid to ask for help.

5. Why did you want to collaborate with GloGlo?

I love that this collaboration can bring joy, inspire imagination, and support the T1D community. The Austin Limited Edition GloGlo jar is a way to celebrate kids and families living with Type 1 Diabetes while also giving back to Breakthrough T1D, the world’s leading organization for T1D research and advocacy. While some may look at T1D as a weakness, GloGlo is working to make it our greatest strength!

6. What is your favorite part of the Austin GloGlo jar?

I love that it’s playful, positive, and connected to a bigger mission. It celebrates kids, superheroes, resilience, and the idea that Type 1 Diabetes can be part of your story without taking over your whole story.
